Vilnius appears so distant and infinite when observed through the windows of the National Gallery of Art, whereas the interior of the gallery creates experience akin to that of Jacques Tati’s Playtime. The NGA (est. 2009) is the youngest museum of modern and contemporary art in Europe. The building is a fine example of Lithuanian modernist architecture, for it originally has been built in 1980, before reconstructed in 2009 to house an outstanding Lithuanian modern art collection. The National Gallery of Art is an ambitious institution in possession of a huge variety of audio and video materials; its very first temporary exhibitions Dialogues of Colour and Sound: Works by M.K Čiurlionis and his Contemporaries and Cold War Modern: Design 1945–1970 introduced the gallery as an excellent venue for modern art.
