Screening of WARIAZONE by Kiwa and Terje Toomistu
The documentary film WARIAZONE (74’) explores the notion of transgender in Indonesia. The male-to-female transsexuals who are called by the artificial word waria (wanita, woman + pria, man) are a well-known phenomenon in the cultural mosaic of the country with the world’s largest Moslem community. Presumably there are 35,000 warias in Indonesia, although the number could be larger in a country with a population of over 200 million.
