The “new media“ boom of the 90’s might be seen as the main impetus for artistic production in the Riga of that time. The Internet and other new technical possibilities were considered a new platform, as it was not easy for artists from new states to gain space in the western art world and market. This is also the reason why the Visual Communication Department of the Art Academy of Latvia still assigns the term “media” a strong emphasis.
The Riga Centre for New Media Culture has managed the shift from “new media” as an instrument and isolated discipline to “new media” as a trespassing tool, generating a specific focus on cultural themes. In the main, this has been done through collaboration with international participants, RIXC has, since 1996, organized notable exhibitions and seminars, like Waves in 2006, or, in collaboration with the experimental music forum Sound Forest, invited Tony Conrad for a concert in 2007.
